After years of anticipation, Toy Story 5 has finally been screened for members of the press, and the early reactions are overwhelmingly positive. Critics are praising Pixar’s latest sequel as a heartfelt, emotional, and entertaining return to the beloved franchise that has delighted audiences for three decades.
Film critic Scott Menzel described Toy Story 5 as a perfect blend of humor, heart, and classic Pixar magic. According to him, the movie stands alongside the first three Toy Story films and could become one of the best movies of 2026.
Daniel Baptista, host of The Movie Podcast, called the film a “generation-defining experience.” He praised Pixar for delivering a meaningful and moving story that feels especially relevant today. He also highlighted the new character Smarty Pants, voiced by Conan O’Brien, and noted that the film gives Jessie a well-deserved spotlight.
Several other critics shared similar reactions. Variety editor Jazz Tangcay described the movie as “emotional, funny, genuinely warm, and perfect in every way.” She praised the new characters and said the film made her both laugh and cry.
Collider editor Meredith Loftus was particularly impressed by the film’s deeper themes. She said Toy Story 5 explores the growing role of technology in children’s lives through a touching story centered on Jessie. Loftus called the movie “deeply profound” and ranked it alongside fan favorites Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3.
The story reunites Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, and the rest of the gang after the events of Toy Story 4. This time, the toys face a new challenge in the form of Lilypad, an iPad-like device that becomes part of Bonnie’s life. The arrival of this technology-driven character forces the toys to adapt and work together once again.
Fan-favorite voice actors Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, and Joan Cusack return as Woody, Buzz, and Jessie. They are joined by new cast members, including Greta Lee and Conan O’Brien.
Director Andrew Stanton, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind Finding Nemo and WALL-E, is directing a Toy Story movie for the first time. Stanton explained that Lilypad is not a traditional villain but represents the changing world children are growing up in. While Jessie relies on experience and traditional play, Lilypad offers a modern approach to helping children learn and grow.
With glowing reviews, strong emotional storytelling, and a fresh take on technology versus traditional toys, Toy Story 5 is shaping up to be one of Pixar’s most talked-about releases in years.
Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on June 19, 2026.
