As climate change, geopolitical tensions, and supply chain disruptions continue to challenge global food production, experts are warning that technology alone will not be enough to create a secure and resilient food system.

Speaking at the Hello Tomorrow Summit in Amsterdam, food and innovation leaders emphasized that while advanced technologies can help identify risks earlier than ever before, meaningful change will require strong government policies, long-term planning, and international cooperation.

Christine R. Gould, founder of Giga Futures, argued that simply making the current food system more resilient is not enough. According to her, resilience often means returning to the same system that is already struggling to meet today’s challenges. The existing food system was designed to maximize production and shelf life, but modern realities demand much more.

Many experts agree that the global food system needs major improvements, but there is less agreement on how those changes should happen.

Marc Canal, a senior fellow at McKinsey Global Institute, presented a more optimistic view. He highlighted humanity’s history of technological progress and innovation, suggesting that continued advancements could significantly improve living standards worldwide while reducing environmental impact. He encouraged governments and businesses to continue investing in innovation and economic growth.

However, technology leaders also stressed that innovation must be supported by effective political action. Giuseppe Borghi of the European Space Agency (ESA) explained how the agency is developing digital models that combine satellite imagery, weather data, supply-chain information, and agricultural data. These systems can help predict problems such as crop failures, floods, and wildfires before they become major crises.

Despite these technological advances, Borghi said the bigger challenge is coordinating governments, industries, and cultures to act on the information provided. In his view, political cooperation remains the missing piece.

The debate comes at a time when global food security is facing growing pressure. Recent shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have contributed to higher fuel and fertilizer costs, increasing concerns about food prices and supply stability.

Gould believes governments must take a more active role in supporting food innovation. She pointed to historical examples such as the creation of the U.S. land-grant university system during the Civil War, showing how ambitious public policies can drive long-term agricultural progress even during periods of uncertainty.

She also highlighted how artificial intelligence (AI) could help identify new uses for existing technologies, discover crops better suited to changing climates, and accelerate innovation across sectors. However, she noted that many of these initiatives require public funding because private companies often focus on shorter-term business goals.

Rather than simply reacting to crises, Gould urged policymakers to build what she called an “antifragile” food system—one that becomes stronger when faced with challenges and disruptions.

Her message was clear: technology is a powerful tool, but securing the future of food will require visionary leadership, smart policies, public investment, and collaboration across society.

As global risks become more complex, experts say governments and businesses must embrace that complexity rather than avoid it. The future of food security depends not only on innovation but also on the willingness to act on it.
