Sony Pictures is hoping to make box office history with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the latest Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland and Zendaya. Early estimates suggest the film could become the biggest movie opening of 2026 and one of the highest-grossing opening weekends ever.

The movie arrives after Universal’s The Odyssey enjoyed two weeks of strong box office performance with little competition. Now, Spider-Man is expected to take center stage with a projected domestic opening of $195 million across 4,300 theaters in North America. Industry tracking services are reporting similar figures.

If the film reaches that target, it will easily surpass Disney’s Toy Story 5, which opened with $159.6 million last month, making Spider-Man: Brand New Day the biggest opening of the year. It would also enter the list of the Top 10 biggest domestic openings of all time, beating the 2019 remake of The Lion King, which debuted with $191.7 million.

For comparison, the last movie to cross the $200 million mark in its opening weekend was Deadpool & Wolverine, which earned $211.4 million in 2024. The all-time record still belongs to Avengers: Endgame, which opened to a staggering $357.1 million in 2019.

Strong Global Expectations

Sony expects the movie to earn another $270 million internationally, bringing its projected worldwide opening weekend total to $465 million. China is expected to play a major role in that success.

Such a performance would make it Sony’s second-largest global opening ever, behind Spider-Man: No Way Home, which launched with $600.5 million worldwide in 2021. It would also comfortably beat the $381.6 million global debut of Spider-Man 3 in 2007.

Story Focuses on a Lonely Peter Parker

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film follows Peter Parker as he struggles with life after losing the people closest to him. His lonely existence is disrupted when a dangerous new enemy begins targeting him.

The movie is a collaboration between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios. According to the Boxoffice Company, Brand New Day accounts for 49% of all weekend showtimes, showing how strongly theater owners believe in its success. By comparison, The Odyssey occupied only 22% of showtimes during its opening weekend and still managed a strong $124.5 million debut.

Excellent Reviews Could Push Earnings Even Higher

The film is already receiving excellent reviews from critics, which could help boost ticket sales beyond current expectations.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day currently holds a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That score is close to other highly praised Spider-Man films, including:

  • Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (97%)
  • Spider-Man: No Way Home (93%)

The cast also includes Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, and Mark Ruffalo.

Film critic David Rooney praised the movie, saying it highlights the humanity that has always made Spider-Man special. He also described Tom Holland’s performance as his best yet.

Can It Challenge No Way Home?

Some industry experts believe the movie could earn significantly more than the projected $195 million opening. The big question is whether it can come close to the $260.1 million domestic opening achieved by Spider-Man: No Way Home.

However, No Way Home benefited from unique circumstances. Fans were excited by the return of former Spider-Men Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, and the film arrived when many audiences were eager to return to theaters after the pandemic.

Defying Superhero Fatigue

In recent months, there has been growing discussion about “superhero fatigue” as several franchise films struggled at the box office. Examples include June’s Supergirl and May’s The Mandalorian and Grogu.

Despite these concerns, analysts believe Spider-Man remains one of the strongest and most beloved characters in entertainment.

Shawn Robbins, Director of Analytics at Fandango and founder of Box Office Theory, said Tom Holland’s Spider-Man movies have stayed fresh because of smart storytelling, good timing, and a strong connection with audiences. He called the franchise a “gold standard” for keeping a popular character relevant across multiple generations.

Tom Holland Open to More Spider-Man Films

Tom Holland, who first starred as Spider-Man in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, says playing the superhero has been the greatest opportunity of his career.

Speaking at the Los Angeles premiere of Brand New Day, Holland said:

“It has been the gift of my life. I will do it for as long as they’ll have me.”

He added that if audiences continue to support the films, more Spider-Man adventures could be on the way.

Final Thoughts

With strong reviews, massive audience interest, a popular cast, and the enduring appeal of Spider-Man, Spider-Man: Brand New Day appears ready to become one of the biggest movie events of 2026. If projections hold true, the film could not only deliver the year’s largest opening weekend but also prove that superhero movies still have plenty of life left in them.
