Obama Center’s opening draws former presidents, music legends and A-list celebrities –
The grand opening of the Barack Obama Presidential Center in Chicago became one of the most star-studded events of the year, bringing together former presidents, global leaders, celebrities, musicians, athletes, and media personalities.
Former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama officially opened the $850 million center on Chicago’s South Side on June 18, 2026. The 20-acre campus celebrates Obama’s presidency from 2009 to 2017 and features a public library, playgrounds, sports facilities, and community spaces designed to serve future generations.
The event attracted an impressive guest list that included former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, media icon Oprah Winfrey, actor Tom Hanks, and music legend Stevie Wonder.
Several world-famous musicians took part in the celebrations. Bruce Springsteen, a longtime friend of Obama, delivered a performance during the ceremony. The two have maintained a close friendship for years and even collaborated on the podcast Renegades: Born in the USA.
Singer Christina Aguilera also performed, singing Louis Armstrong’s classic song What a Wonderful World. Chicago native Jennifer Hudson opened the event with a powerful rendition of the U.S. national anthem, making the occasion especially meaningful for the award-winning performer.
Irish rock stars Bono and The Edge of U2 joined the entertainment lineup as well. Both had previously performed during Obama’s 2009 inauguration celebrations.
Stevie Wonder added to the excitement by joining Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, Common, and The Roots for a special all-star performance. Wonder has a long connection with Obama, having performed at his inauguration and receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom from him in 2014.
The celebration also welcomed several famous television personalities, including David Letterman, Stephen Colbert, and Conan O’Brien.
Sports were represented too, with NBA Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade attending alongside his wife, actress Gabrielle Union.
The opening of the Obama Presidential Center marks a major milestone for Chicago and serves as a lasting tribute to the nation’s 44th president. The center is expected to become an important cultural, educational, and community destination for years to come.
